Serving Our Community: From Labor Rights to Global Humanitarian Efforts
Participating in a Labor Roundtable
I participated in a labor roundtable hosted by the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation. These direct conversations with workers and union leaders are essential to understanding the real challenges facing our workforce today. During our discussions, we delved into pressing issues affecting Minnesota’s workers, from fair wages and safe working conditions to the need for stronger protections against unfair labor practices and the potential for AI to displace workers. As your representative, I remain committed to amplifying these voices in Congress and fighting for legislation that supports a stronger, fairer workforce.
Visiting Students at the Adult English Classes
Last week, I visited the Lyndale Neighborhood Association’s Adult English Classes. I spoke with students from many diverse backgrounds and more than a dozen different countries. As they discussed the challenges of learning English, I was transported back to my own journey as a young immigrant. What struck me most was the beautiful balance these learners maintain — embracing their new home while cherishing their rich cultural heritage. These classes do more than teach language, they also build community, foster understanding, and help new Americans find their voice. I will continue to support programs that empower immigrants and refugees.

Asking the President to Form a Humanitarian Parole Program for Sudanese People
The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has unleashed devastating violence, with reports of potential genocide in Darfur. That’s why I led a letter to urge President Biden to establish a humanitarian parole program for Sudanese people, similar to those created for Ukrainians and Afghans. The success of programs for Afghanistan and Ukraine proves that we can adapt creatively to humanitarian crises. By creating a humanitarian parole program for Sudan, we can offer a lifeline to those caught in this brutal conflict through no fault of their own. Read more about the letter to the President.
Hosting Our June Town Hall
Last week, I had the pleasure of hosting our June town hall at the newly opened Rockford Road Library in Crystal. These gatherings are always a highlight for me, as they provide an invaluable opportunity to connect directly with you. I shared updates on my recent work in Congress and in the community. For those who couldn’t attend, we live streamed the event, and a recording is available here. I encourage you to watch and stay informed about how we’re working to serve you.
Introducing the Tribal Courts Support Act
I joined Representatives Sharice Davids and Raúl Grijalva in introducing the Tribal Courts Support Act. This important legislation aims to streamline and improve the process by which tribal courts receive support from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. For too long, tribal nations have faced unnecessary hurdles in establishing and funding their court systems. These delays and inefficiencies have hindered tribal sovereignty and compromised public safety in Indian Country. By removing administrative barriers and expediting support, we’re taking a crucial step towards ensuring tribes have the resources they need to govern effectively and protect their communities. Read about the bill here.
Continuing the Fight for Medicare for All
I’ve always believed that health care is a fundamental human right. That’s why I’m a proud champion of Medicare for All. I hear from Minnesotans struggling with outrageous medical bills, skyrocketing prescription drug costs, and the constant fear of bankruptcy due to health issues.
Here’s what Medicare for All would mean for our community:
● Comprehensive coverage for every American, regardless of employment or income
● No more out-of-pocket costs, deductibles, or co-pays
● Lower prescription drug prices
● Mental health and dental care included
Some say we can’t afford it, but I say we can’t afford not to do it. The current system is bleeding us dry while insurance companies rake in billions. Medicare for All would save money in the long run by cutting administrative costs and negotiating better prices. I won’t stop fighting until every American has the health care they deserve.

Ilhan Omar
