Reducing Child Poverty in Minnesota|Weekly Update March 22–26, 2021

Dear friend,

This week, our country endured another mass shooting that took the lives of ten people in Colorado. We can’t let this tragic loss of life continue and allow Senate Republicans to cower to the gun lobby. People need more than just our thoughts and prayers in this moment — they need meaningful gun reform legislation implemented. In the House, we recently passed legislation to require universal background checks on all gun sales. It’s imperative we get this bill passed in the Senate and signed into law. I promise I won’t stop fighting until we end gun violence once and for all.

Reducing Child Poverty in Minnesota

Because of the American Rescue Plan, over 1.1 million children in Minnesota are expected to benefit from the child tax credit in the recently passed stimulus package. This will lift thousands of children out of poverty in our state and help children thrive. You can read more here.

Creating an Environment Where All Girls Can Thrive

For far too long, Black girls and women have been penalized for simply existing as themselves. This week, I introduced two bills to end hair discrimination and create an environment where all girls can thrive. You can read more about the Crown Act here and the Pushout Act here.

Holding Saudi Arabia Accountable

This week, I introduced and passed an amendment to create consequences for Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) and other Saudi officials involved in the Jamal Khashoggi murder. This legislation is not just about justice for Khashoggi but about standing up for human rights everywhere. You can read more here.
