November 2021: Time to Build Back Better
Dear friend,
We’re getting really close to passing the Build Back Better Act through the House that will deliver for Minnesotans in a tangible way. This bill will deliver universal pre-k, affordable childcare, green jobs, lower prescription drug costs, and paid family and medical leave. This historic legislation will all be paid for by making sure the ultra-wealthy and corporations finally pay their fair share in taxes. The House is ready to deliver.
Combating Global Islamophobia
We are seeing a rise in Islamophobia in nearly every corner of the globe. As part of our commitment to international religious freedom and human rights, we must recognize Islamophobia and do all we can to eradicate it. That’s why I was proud to partner with Rep. Jan Schakowsky to create a special envoy to address the rise in incidents of Islamophobia worldwide. You can read more here.
Honoring Prince with Congressional Gold Medal
Prince is a Minnesota icon. He showed that it was okay to be a short, Black kid from Minneapolis and still change the world. He not only changed the arc of music history; he put Minneapolis on the map. Places like First Avenue, Uptown are landmarks because of Prince. Last week, I partnered with Senator Amy Klobuchar to give Prince the recognition he deserves with the Congressional Gold Medal. You can read more here.
Improving House Oversight of Arms Sales
The State Department oversees about $170 billion in arms sales every year, including to some of the most egregious human rights abusers in the world. This does nothing to further the cause of human rights, but does line the pockets of some of the largest war profiteers and weapons contractors. If we are serious about putting human rights at the center of our foreign policy, we need to stop arming human rights abusers, full stop. That’s why I’m proud to support Rep. Ted Lieu’s critical bill to provide more meaningful oversight over arms sales. You can read more here.
