I’m heartbroken to learn the news that there have been numerous deaths at the New Hope Senior Care Center. This virus has robbed the lives of so many in our community. Last year, I had the opportunity to visit this remarkable care facility and hear from caregivers and residents.

This visit meant so much to me.

I visited after Donald Trump tried to eliminate the Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) program, which would have depleted the number of staff members at St. Therese. One-fifth of the organization’s workforce are Liberians who escaped civil war in the early 1990s. They were set to lose their jobs last April. Luckily, the administration was unsuccessful in their pursuit to elimate this vital program. These workers provide quality care and know the personal stories of the residents they serve.

After speaking to many of the residents, they informed me that the caregivers provide much needed hope amidst difficult times. I know they must have fought to care for each resident infected by the coronavirus.

I’m sending prayers and condolences to all those impacted by the sudden loss at New Hope.

Here’s a look into my visit that profoundly impacted me.
